Flanders Statue of Saint Pauls in Oak
Flanders Statue of Saint Pauls in Oak
This is a highly hand-carved oak statue of Saint Paul, originating from a church in the Flanders region near Waterloo, Belgium, and dating to the early 1900s. The figure is rendered in a distinctly elongated form, characteristic of Flemish devotional folk carving from that period.
Saint Paul is shown holding his traditional attribute, the sword, symbolising both his martyrdom and the “Sword of the Spirit.” The carving displays expressive features: a long, stylised beard, deeply cut eyes, and draped robes with flowing vertical lines that emphasise the tall, slender silhouette.
Considering its 100 years of age the oak has some light wear and patina which only enhancing the depth and contrast of the carved details. The statue has a strong but serene presence, making it an excellent example of early 20th-century ecclesiastical Flemish woodcarving but also a perfect addition to many modern interiors.
