Handmade Crochet Patchwork Throw #2

£0.00

This throw is not just a fantastic piece of folk art but a labour of love. It is a handmade crochet patchwork blanket in mixed quality, colours and weight yarns in a variety of shapes and sizes that compose a beautiful cosy organic shape throw. From fluffy squares to woolly stripes it just screams cosy! You can use it either at the end of your bed or your sofa and armchair. It would also be a perfect gift to a loved one. This throw hasn’t been used or changed hands over the years as it was made by Yannis’ mum in 2000s while she was visiting in London, therefore the condition is really good. The design is a collaboration between mother and son.

My mum, Daphné, would learn as a little girl the art of crochet as part of the Greek tradition where young girls, in preparation for their marriage dowry, must produce a huge amount of textile pieces with the help of their mothers and grandmothers. When the time comes to get married they display their wares to their village, taking them on a parade to their groom's house whilst accompanied by music and dance. The dowry law in Greece ended in 1982, but the tradition continues in some rural parts of the country to this day.
